Stop after the point

The sentence after your best sentence is where arguments go to die.

You made the point. Then you added a caveat, an example, a 'you know?', a joke to soften it β€” and gave them four new things to argue with instead of one. Land it, then close your mouth. Silence after a good point is pressure on THEM.

Instead of

So I think we should delay it, basically, I mean unless you think otherwise, it's just that last time β€” sorry, go on.

The science

The 'presenter's paradox' again (Weaver et al., 2012): additions after a strong point lower the average impression. Negotiation trainers call the extra sentence 'buying it back'.
