Use their own words
The hardest evidence to argue with is what someone already said.
Listen for the sentence they'll have to stand by, and bring it back. 'You said fairness matters most — so how is this fair?' It isn't a gotcha if you do it warmly; it's holding them to their own standard, which is the one standard they can't reject.

Consistency pressure is Cialdini's commitment principle (Influence, 1984): people move to match what they've already said. Cross-examiners are trained to build on prior answers for the same reason.
