🗣️ Everyday DisagreementsMedium💬 Over text

What to text a friend who keeps cancelling on you

The situation

This is the third time this friend has cancelled on the day. You like them and you don't want to lose them, but you're done pretending it's fine. It's over text, so the tone has to carry everything. What do you send?

They open with: “So sorry, absolutely dead tonight, can we do next week? 🙏

Why it's hard: You don't want to lose the friend or seem dramatic, so you keep replying "no worries!" — and the resentment quietly builds instead.

Two things you could say

  • Honestly? Third time's stung a bit. I really do want to see you — can we pick something and actually lock it in, even if it's weeks away?

One honest line without a lecture lands as real rather than sulky, and asking to lock something in turns a complaint into a plan they can say yes to.

  • No stress about tonight. But I'm going to be straight — I've stopped fully believing plans with us happen, and I miss you, so I'd love to fix that.

Saying the uncomfortable true thing calmly, paired with "I miss you", makes it about the friendship rather than a telling-off, which keeps them from getting defensive over text.

What to avoid

"it's fine 🙂" when it isn't. — a passive line the other person can feel through the screen; it reads as cold, invites a guessing game, and lets the pattern continue because you never named it.

The principle

Warm and specific beats cold and vague. Say the true thing once, without a lecture, and give them one concrete way to make it right. Written down, a short message reads as calm; a long one reads as a grievance.
